How to Build the Perfect Sandcastle on Grace Bay Beach

While winter may seem endless, we’re already in the midst of spring with summer just around the corner. There will soon be warm, sunny days to spend on the beach with your family. To help you escape the lingering winter blues, here is a short guide to building a sandcastle on Grace Bay beach, or wherever you decide to spend the summer.

sand castle

To build the perfect sandcastle you’ll need:

  1. The right tools
  2. The right ingredients (water and sand)
  3. Some inspiration

Let’s get started!

1. Tools for Building a Sandcastle

As everybody knows, all you really need to build a sandcastle are a plastic shovel and a small bucket for sand and water. Of course, as any professional sandcastle builder will tell you, there’s more to it than that.

The quality of your shovel will largely determine how complex your finished sandcastle will be. A cheap plastic shovel will likely break (and end up as litter left behind on the beach). A sturdy metal garden shovel will last for season after season of digging. A larger metal spade will allow you to shovel impressive amounts of sand.

Choosing the right bucket is also important. The small plastic buckets we commonly associate with building sandcastles are suitable for child’s play, but the pros typically bring buckets of various sizes, to efficiently carry water and shift sand around.

Sand sculpting kit?

Professional sandcastle builders go beyond buckets and shovels, and depend on all sorts of tools, including ladders, masonry trowels, and even concrete forms. One handy set of tools that even families can take to the beach is a sand sculpting kit. These kits include a handy tool called a shaper, which allows you to carve out roofs, walls, windows and stairs.

However, to get those details in your sandcastle you need to make sure you have the perfect sand, first.

2. Sandcastle Ingredients

It seems obvious, but the two main ingredients in building a sandcastle are sand and water. However, some experts regard the combination of these two essential ingredients as an exact science.

Damp sand is key

The perfect sandcastle requires one bucket of water to eight buckets of dry sand, according to one writer. A sedimentologist states there’s actually a “magic ” formula: Water = 0.125 x sand.

Why is damp sand so important?

The film of water between individual sand grains is what gives sand its strength, too much and it lubricates one grain over the other, but just right and it binds them strong.

Danish scientists actually tested different ratios of sand and water in a laboratory. Using the what they called an “optimal water content” of two percent, the Danish scientists managed to construct a cylindrical sand tower, only 2 cm wide but which rose 25 cm up in the air. With a cylinder width of 16 cm, the tower rose an impressive 100 cm from the laboratory floor.

Water molecules ‘want’ to stick together. That’s why vapor in the air clusters into drops that fall to earth as rain. But the water molecules also ‘want’ to coat the sand grains. These coated grains then stick together via the capillary bridges the water forms.

And this is why we can build sandcastles at the beach.

Water is the key to a perfect sandcastle

Depending where you are on the beach, however, it’s actually not always easy to find a good supply of damp sand to build your sandcastle masterpiece. If you decide to build close to the tide line, where the sand is damp, then you ‘ll be seeing your creation destroyed when the tide starts coming in.

One solution is to dig a water hole.

Building Your Sandcastle

As mentioned, use moist sand. Squeeze a ball of sand in your hand for a few seconds. If the ball stays together when you roll it around in your palm, it’s perfect sand for a castle. A good first step is to dig a trench or moat around the perimeter of your proposed sandcastle, and dump the sand in the middle. This will be the basis of your creation.

Pounding makes perfect

Sand sculptors often do not use plastic buckets, but instead build their shapes by stacking handfuls of wet sand or by tamping it down in a topless and bottomless form.

With the back of your shovel, pack the sides of the mound to form walls. Make them higher than the center of the mound, creating a “bowl” to hold water. Keep packing until you get the height you want.

Don’t forget a finishing touch. Renzo Piano, the architect who designed the Shard in London, says he got his start dreaming about sandcastles at the beach. His advice?

“Put a little flag or anything else you can find on the sandcastle, just to make it visible to people running on the beach. Go home and don’t look back,” he says. Here’s a wonderful illustration from his interview.

Get inspired

If you want to up your sandcastle game, there are plenty of places to get inspired. Martha Stewart has a step-by-step guide to building sandcastles. Architectural Digest has a list of the “23 coolest sandcastles you’ll ever see“, and if you want to graduate to the big leagues of abstract sand art, Smithsonian has a guide to sand sculptures.

The simple sandcastle really is the gateway to truly individual creative expression.

Some Stunning Sandcastles

Instagram is also a source of stunning sandcastles. There are hundreds of thousands of sandcastles to scroll there using the #sandcastle hashtag. Here are just a few.

How Is Turks and Caicos Recovering from Hurricanes Irma and Maria?

Nearly six months have passed since the Turks and Caicos experienced two hurricanes in one month. While power was quickly restored to the entire country, and damage was cleaned up very rapidly, we still get questions about how Turks and Caicos is recovering from the hurricanes of 2017.

In short, everything was quickly restored to normal following the storms in September, and we’re waiting for you to come and visit us here on Grace Bay beach.

The September 2017 Turks and Caicos Hurricanes

In September 2017, the Turks and Caicos experienced two hurricanes, Hurricane Irma and then Hurricane Maria. Of the two storms, Irma earlier in September had the greater impact on Turks and Caicos. Irma, which reached Turks and Caicos on September 7, brought with it high winds, powerful waves and a storm surge.

Turks and Caicos Map
By Flickr user Rian Castillo. (CC BY-SA 2.0)

Most of the effects from Irma were experienced to the east of Providenciales, notably on North Caicos and on the island of Grand Turk. Grand Turk, about a 12o kilometers east of Providenciales and Grace Bay beach, is the location of Cockburn Town, the capital city, and the major cruise ship port serving the country. The damage was more serious than here on Providenciales.

On Providenciales, the storm mostly affected the residential are of Blue Hills. Damage was significant, but luckily visitors and many others contributed to a reconstruction fund to help residents rebuild.

The main challenge following Irma was downed power lines. Thankfully, the local power utility worked quickly to restore electrical service, with help from crews from all over North America.

Power was restored throughout the Turks and Caicos quite quickly. In the meantime, the resorts along Grace Bay beach worked to patch up damage from Irma. This included fixing up landscaping, touching up paint, and generally tidying up. Grace Bay beach itself was unaffected by the storms, and is now more beautiful than ever.

Providenciales International Airport (PLS) was also quickly reopened following the hurricane, and actively received flights. Cargo freighters also started arriving on Providenciales just after Hurricane Irma to deliver all commodities, making sure grocery stores were open and re-stocked.

Recovery happened quickly, in time for the winter holiday season.

“Guests will also be pleased to know that Grace Bay Beach, acclaimed as one of the world’s best and most award-clad beaches, remains just as spectacular as ever,” said Mona Beeson, General Manager of The Sands at Grace Bay, in an announcement at the end of the September. “In fact, waves from the storms broke at the reef and actually brushed more sand upon the island’s shores in this area giving us an even more expansive beach.”

None of the Sands resort’s recently remodeled 114 studio- and suite-style accommodations were impacted and all are fully functional with electrical power, A/C, water, and WiFi to provide guests with plush comfort throughout their stay.

10 Ways to Start Off the New Year Right

10 Ways to Start the New Year Right

It can be depressing to contemplate, but 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. On January 1st we all want to start off the New Year with a clean slate, and typically resolve to eat less, exercise more and lose weight, but a month later you’re back, stuck in a rut.

New Year’s resolutions fail for a variety of reason, typically because they’re too ambitious or too vague. However, there are ways to successfully change your behavior and reach goals. Here are some tips for starting of the New Year right.

1. Do a yearly review

If you want to move forward, it’s important to understand where you’ve been. So, the first step to meeting your new goals is to take stock of where you’ve been and recognize the accomplishments you’ve made in the previous year.

To perform a yearly review, answer the following questions:

  • What went well for me last year?
  • What accomplishments did I have?
  • How did I improve my life?
  • How did I improve my relationships?
  • What did I remove from my life that is now making me happier?
  • What do I wish I had taken more time for?

2. Finish what you started

To start out right, it’s also important to close off loose ends. So, what general list of to-do items do you have left over from the previous year?  If you can identify tasks that you can complete 2 hours or less, do them first thing in January to clear your mind for new projects.

3. Set achievable goals

Identify where you are now and where you want to be at this time next year. Keep in mind: if you don’t know where you’re going, it will be tough to get there.

If you want to be in a different position next year, plan how you’re going to make a change.

4. Take note of — and celebrate — your successes

Take stock of your accomplishments. For example, if you you achieved success at work in the previous year, make a list of what you did and create a forward-focused resume and online profile to highlight your new skills.

5. Figure out what new skills you’re going to need

If you have career plans, you’ll likely going to need new skills to move ahead–strategize about how you can get them. If you want to get in shape, do a little reading or YouTube research about how to best exercise.

6. Keep an eye on the future

Believe it or not, January 1st is a good time to start thinking about the outlook for the next year (one year from now) and beyond. Be realistic and consider what action you should take if prospects aren’t promising.

7. Get active in a group

Join a book club or a running group. Volunteer for a community association. Professional organizations provide many opportunities to volunteer, or to learn new skills. What’s important is making human connections, with the chance to give back to your community.

Look for a small job to start,

8. Keep an eye on the important things

If you’ve been neglecting your health, your family or friends, make a point to address those concerns in the new year and you’ll be more likely to be successful in your work life as well.

9. Be flexible

It’s difficult to go very far at work if you aren’t flexible. Try your best to be open to new ideas and new ways to do things and make a goal to try to say “yes” more than “no” at work when it comes to suggestions from your colleagues and supervisors.

10. Plan to take a vacation

Relaxation is also the key to success. Taking a break from work (or just the general effort of sticking to your New Year’s resolutions) allows you to reenergize, refocus and hit a reset button… kind of the same effect as New Year’s Day.

And why not holiday in the Turks and Caicos

Located only 80 minutes by air from Miami, and with regular airline service from New York, Boston, Atlanta, Charlotte, Philadelphia and Toronto, The Sands at Grace Bay is an easy-to-reach destination for the perfect Caribbean vacation. Conch Festival 2017 Coming Soon

The idea for the conch festival started simply as a way to bring more visitors to the Blue Hills, a settlement of the Turks and Caicos Islands just a few miles away from the popular Grace Bay Beach. Wanting to bring the feeling of a carnival to the area of Blue Hills, the organizers of the now-famous conch festival decided to play to their strengths and celebrate the iconic cuisine of the region: the conch. Conch Festival 2017 will be the 14th annual event, taking place on Saturday afternoon, November 25th, outside the Three Queens Bar and Restaurant.

Conch in Turks & Caicos Islands

The conch is the main export of the Turks and Caicos Islands and has been a local delicacy for centuries. Indeed, the Turks and Caicos Islands are home to the only commercial conch farm in the world, Caicos Conch farm. The farm started as a way to meet the vast demand for exported conch from the Caribbean to the rest of the world, and now has become a popular tourist destination.

Besides having a beautiful shell and holding an important place of honour in the history, culture and economy of the islands, the conch also features prominently in local cuisine. The Turks and Caicos Islands are full of gourmet restaurants offering a variety of flavourful, spicy local dishes centered around the delicious conch. The local cuisine features a variety of ways to prepare the conch. Some of the most popular dishes include conch fritters, where the sea snail is breaded and fried, or the conch salad, where the conch is served raw. The conch festival is an opportunity for local restaurants to show their most creative take on the islands’ food “mascot.” From conch wontons to conch empanadas, the festival encourages local chefs to get creative.

Judges sample each restaurant’s offerings and award prizes for the best overall conch dish, best specialty dish, best conch salad, and the best conch chowder. The overall winner of the festival is selected by a popular vote, and every visitor that opts to purchase a tasting pass can join in on the fun! While the judges are hard at work, agonizing over these tough decisions, visitors to the festival are treated to a cornucopia of local music, art and dancing. The festival also promotes itself as family-friendly (while also offering a prize for the best Mojito, for the parents), and offers fun activities for kids including face painting, competitions and games, and raffles.
