It’s that time of year again. The snows are already swirling and we can look forward to months and months of cold and chill. Unless you’re lucky enough to look forward to celebrating Christmas in Turks and Caicos, that is.

We know that Christmas is just around the corner as the holidays kick off with the annual Turks and Caicos Conch Festival on Saturday, November 24th.

The residents of Turks & Caicos celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s in all the traditional ways, but they also add a cultural twist and there are some festivities that are truly not to be missed.

In the lead-up to the event, follow @conchfestival on Instagram, and also be sure to check out the Facebook page for updates: https://www.facebook.com/TCIConchFestival

Celebrating Christmas in Turks and Caicos

The Conch Festival is actually the kickoff of the Christmas season, and features a visit from Santa. The holiday season lasts for at least a month in Turks and Caicos, and this means that there is almost always something for your family to do on your vacation here.

Besides the Christmas trees and colorful lights, there are events occurring from late November to early January.

Christmas Day in Turks and Caicos

Our resort typically decorates a spectacular Christmas trees that greets you when you arrive in the resort. There will be decorations around the resort as well, adding to the festive atmosphere. Many restaurants offer a special Christmas dinner service.

Maskanoo Parade (December 26th)

Maskanoo is an annual event in the Turks and Caicos and is held “Boxing Day”, the day after Christmas (a holiday in Commonwealth countries like the Turks and Caicos).

Maskanoo has its roots in the ‘Masses’, a masquerade tradition that fuses traditional African culture with costumed balls held in the colonial era. On Provo, Maskanoo originated with enslaved people brought by the Bermudian salt farmers to work the salt ponds of nearby Salt Cay and South Caicos two hundred years ago, and the event is observed by the residents of Provo today.

On Providenciales, the Maskanoo parade on December 26th follows a route along Grace Bay Road between the Regent Village and Salt Mills Plaza. Grace Bay Road is closed to traffic for this event.

Food, drink and souvenirs are widely available from local vendors, and visitors can enjoy a street parade, local music, island food, arts, & entertainment.

Post-Christmas Beach Party

On December 28, come out to enjoy local band, native foods, model sailboat racing, kayak racing, handcrafts and more.

Old Year’s Night

Old tradition for bringing good luck in the new year. All night service in churches, everyone rings out old year and rings in New Year with bells, church gatherings and community greeting.

New Years Eve Parties

Ports of Call, Providenciales – Live Music – No Cover

Check with the local restaurants for special events

Jump Up Junkanoo

Junkanoo street music takes place from midnight to sunrise, New Year’s morning on most islands.

5 Interesting and Offbeat Halloween Costume Ideas

Rubiks Cube Halloween Costume
Rubik’s Cube Halloween Costume by Fred Benenson. From Flickr. Image license: Attribution 2.0 Generic (CC BY 2.0)

With Halloween just around the corner, it can be tough for busy parents to find the time to brainstorm a creative costume. Often, it’s tempting to just head to a big box store and purchase a ready-made getup from off the shelf.

However, Halloween expenses can add up, and store-bought costumes also can be kind of boring and forgettable.

So, here are five fun and easy costume ideas for Halloween.

To make some of these costumes, you may need:

  • Glue gun
  • Double-sided tape
  • Electrical or black tape
  • Elastic

1) Gumball Machine

A fun, unusual and unforgettable costume, a gumball machine is a great way to make memories when as you spend an evening trooping around the neighborhood in search of Halloween treats.

It takes about 2 hours to create.

  1. Paint a plastic soda bottle cap with silver paint. With a hot-glue gun, glue to red hat.
  2. Cut a 5 out of black craft foam and glue to pants leg.
  3. Cut hood and sleeves off a clear raincoat; put on backward (snaps in back). Use a 30-inch piece of elastic as a belt; blouse coat over it.
  4. Blow up 20 multicolored balloons halfway. Put in through back of coat. Snap up coat.
  5. Cut off excess, if any.

2) Bubble Bath

This costume also makes use of light, vibrant colors to create a cheery atmosphere on Halloween night. It takes about an hour to make.

  1. Cut a hole in the bottom of an inflatable baby rubber ducky bathtub. Leave at least 2 inches for the rim.
  2. On the remaining bottom rim, punch two holes near the front and back. To make the suspenders from wide ribbon, measure your child from shoulder to waist and multiply by 2; cut two lengths of ribbon to that size.
  3. Thread through the holes, knotting the ends underneath to secure.
  4. Blow up 15 white balloons and attach them with double-stick tape inside the tub and to the sides to make it look like bubbles are overflowing.

Accessorize with bath poufs as hair accessories, and you’re ready to go out trick-or-treating!

3) Raining Cats and Dogs

This costume is fun, and takes about an hour to make.

  1. Find a child-size transparent umbrella.
  2. Use stencils to trace cats and dogs (about 15 of each) onto black felt.
  3. Cut out the cats and dogs, and, keeping about 8 in reserve, glue to the outside of the umbrella.
  4. Use a needle and white thread to dangle the remaining cutouts to the edge of the umbrella, as though they were drops of rain.

Wear with a raincoat and boots, and spend the night knocking on doors in search of candy.

4) Spaghetti and Meatballs

An offbeat and memorable costume, this takes about 3 hours to make. You’ll need a lightweight aluminum pot for this costume.

  1. Cut a hole for the head in the center of a red-checkered tablecloth (or 1.25 yards of 45-inch-wide red-checkered fabric) so that it can be worn like a poncho.
  2. Cut 1/2 skein f off-white yarn into spaghetti-length pieces. With a hot-glue gun, glue them in swirls and bunches to a large, sturdy paper plate.
  3. Paint 8 small styrofoam balls with brown acrylic paint to resemble meatballs. Let dry, then glue 4 or 5 balls to top of spaghetti.
  4. Mix brown and red acrylic paint to make a tomato-sauce color; drip that over meatballs and spaghetti. Smear a little on the side of a small pot.
  5. Glue the plate to the front of the tablecloth.
  6. Glue remaining meatballs to tablecloth where you like.
  7. Glue some strands of yarn to the pot “hat.”

Tie under chin if needed to keep pot on head.

5) Rubik’s Cube

An offbeat and somewhat complicated Halloween costume, this takes about 2 hours to make.

  1. Cut holes for the head and arms in a square box (we used a 16 by 16-inch). Cut the flaps off the open end so that child can pull the finished cube over head.
  2. With craft glue, glue four 8 1/2 by 11-inch sheets of green paper to one side. Repeat with blue, orange, yellow and red paper on other sides. (You may need more if you use a larger box than we did.)
  3. Create the squares with black electrical tape.

Wear some dark clothes (be sure to bring a flashlight so motorists can see you!), and you’re set!

Is Halloween Celebrated in Turks and Caicos?

“Is Halloween celebrated in the Caribbean?” is one of the questions our concierge gets asked a lot at this time of year. The answer? “It’s complicated.”

Davy Jones Pumpkin
Davy Jones Pumpkin, by Flickr user Loren Javier. Image license: Attribution-NoDerivs 2.0 Generic (CC BY-ND 2.0)

Halloween itself is generally not observed in Caribbean culture, which can be quite religious. More than 90 per cent of people in the Turks and Caicos identify as Christian, compared to the more secular United States.

For this reason, and also because Turks and Caicos is a British Overseas Territory, with many British rather than American traditions, Halloween is not as much a part of the culture as on the mainland.

Celebrating Halloween in Turks and Caicos

Still, Halloween starting to be observed in Turks and Caicos each year, making a late-October or early-November holiday in Turks and Caicos great for families.

Different resorts host Halloween celebrations each year, and events for families are typically held in and around the Bight neighborhood, just off central Grace Bay Beach.

In past years a Halloween party was held at Provo Elementary School, but each year it often depends on the resort to organized events, so be sure to check TripAdvisor for up-to-date information.

Tips on Getting Cheap Tickets to Turks and Caicos

For some people, the actual planning process is one of the most enjoyable parts of taking a vacation. It’s always a challenge to hunt down the best flight deals, so here are a few tips:

1. Search for tickets one seat at a time

If you are searching for tickets for your family, if you really want to save money, try searching by one ticket at a time. This is because most automated systems will show you the highest fare for all the tickets. If you try searching one seat at a time, there may be limited seats on sale.

2. Search at midweek

Airlines tend to launch their sales on Tuesdays and end them on Thursdays, so don’t limit your searches to the weekends.

3. Fly on a holiday

It may seem counterintuitive, but the biggest savings can be found by flying on the actual holiday, such as Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. The exception is if you’re traveling over a three-day weekend—then, everyone is looking to fly on the actual holiday, so that’s the perfect time to try and extend your vacation by a day.

4. Fly on a Tuesday, Wednesday or a Saturday

Why? Because planes are least full on these days of the week, these flights usually have the lowest fares.

5. Monitor Twitter, Facebook and airline emails

Follow your favorite airlines on social media in addition to signing up for discount online travel company emails.

“Fabulous Stay!”

We were very fortunate to have been upgraded to a three bedroom deluxe oceanfront apartment with more than enough space for my husband and two teenage sons. What can I say? The apartment was fantastic with an amazing wrap around balcony, beautifully furnished and with exquisite views of the beach. I found the entire resort incredibly clean with wonderful gardens.

“Second Stay and Not the Last!”

My wife and I stayed at The Sand in August of 2017 and liked it so much we returned in August of 2018… There is an undeveloped lot on the west of the resort and a national park to the east so you never feel crowded like other resorts.

We love The Sands at Grace Bay and can’t wait to return.

“Best Vacation Ever!”

My husband and I visited The Sand at Grace Bay in June of 2018 for my 40th birthday. We had the BEST time! TCI was everything we hoped for–relaxing and romantic! We enjoyed the beach everyday and still cannot believe how beautiful it is…

We loved how it felt private and was quiet. The beach never felt overcrowded. We will return!

“Amazing place!!!”

We just got back from staying at the Sands at Grace Bay and it was hands down, the best vacation we’ve ever taken! The hotel is on the beach, grounds are gorgeous, and the vibe is relaxed. Our room was oceanfront and the view was amazing! I can’t say enough about this place!

“Paradise!”

Just back from another amazing holiday at The Sands. Will definitely go back. So friendly and relaxed. Beautiful gardens and pools and of course, the amazing Grace Bay beach! Hemingway’s is a firm favourite and we had a lovely meal on the deck watching the sunset. Wes’s cocktails are out of this world – best mojito!

Back-to-School Tips (and How to Sneak in a Caribbean Vacation)

Summer’s winding down, and it’s back-to-school season. If you have school-aged children, this can be the toughest time of the year for them. As school starts, it’s hard to get up in the morning and get used to a new schedule. We all have an inner scheduler called the circadian clock that helps you fall asleep each night and wake up the next morning.

There are ways to shake off the back-to-school blues by getting into a schedule that resets your clock. Here are some tips.

Start Thinking About School

Going back to school is also a state of mind. It can be quite a shock to the system to head back to the classroom after a couple months of summer vacation.

  • Refresh your rules about screen time for the school year. What’s allowed and when?
  • Encourage your kids to read at least one book before the school year begins.
  • Create a “device-free” zone where your kids will be able to read and study (if they have homework).

Get Ready… To Get Back on Schedule

It’s always a good idea to establish regular bedtime routines for elementary school kids and preschoolers. There are various ways to do this, including:

  • Reacquaint your kids with the calendar schedule they’ll use to manage their activities.
  • Set your kids’ sleep schedules to “School Time” two weeks before the first day.
  • Set  and enforce  regular weekday and weekend bedtimes.
  • Set  and enforce  regular weekday and weekend wake-up calls.

If being on time is really a problem, try setting your clocks forward 10 minutes. This makes it easier for the whole family to be on time.

Get Prepared

It’s not fun to battle the crowds and shop for school supplies the week before school starts. It doesn’t have to be that way if you follow these tips!

  • Keep a running list of supplies, clothing, and food that you need to buy before school starts.
  • Create a list and budget for back-to-school shopping.
  • Let your child choose their clothes, shoes and other personal items they’ll need.

Finally, to make things easy when things get busy in September, set up a hanging organizer with five boxes for clothes, one for each day of the week.

Make Time for Family

Spending time with family is important, and we often forget that when our lives are busier. As the school year kicks off and people’s schedules get busy, establish a set “Family Time,” — whether it’s during dinner or before bed.

Remember to Have Fun

Plan something fun to diffuse this stressful time of year for all of you… consider spending your winter vacation someplace warm, like the Turks and Caicos.

Tips For Taking A Vacation During The School Year

When it comes to planning trips, we can often feel paralyzed by the school calendar. But, if you plan and execute in advance, there is plenty of opportunity to take a vacation without missing school.

With a little creativity and planning, families can travel during school holidays.

Plan Travel Well In Advance

  • Book travel that overlaps school holidays as soon as possible—even a year in advance—to avoid accommodations selling out and inflated airfare.

Outline Your Trip

  • Your vacation will go much more smoothly if you take the time beforehand to outline your plan, including which cities and attractions you’ll be visiting, which accommodations you’ll be using, what you’ll be seeing, etc.
  • Book hotels and restaurants in advance, and buy tickets to any events and attractions if possible.

Make Arrangements for Work and School

To avoid any last-minute conflict with work or school commitments, be sure to make all the necessary arrangements well in advance of your winter vacation.

And, as a parent, do your own homework! Make sure you finish all of your work beforehand, and make arrangements for co-workers to take care of any necessary tasks in your absence.

Use Travel Planning Tools For Your Caribbean Vacation

Did you know that taking a break from it all actually benefits your health? Studies show that people who take vacations have lower stress, less risk of heart disease, a better outlook on life, and more motivation to achieve goals. However, just planning a Caribbean vacation can be a lot of work. As the fall and winter travel season approaches, we’ve gathered some useful travel tools to make your planning easier.

Useful Travel Media to Research Your Trip

Providenciales and the Turks and Caicos are on the map. Celebrities like Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner and Kim Kardashian are visitors, and snowbirds from all over North America now come here to escape the winter chill.

Since so much is being written about Turks and Caicos, it can be difficult to find useful, relevant information. Here are a few niche publications to help plan your dream vacation.

Caribbean Journal

Caribbean Journal is one of the most popular publications covering the Caribbean. The site features reviews of Caribbean resorts, guides to different parts of the Caribbean and news about travel deals.

Uncommon Caribbean

Our own Da Conch Shack, one of the “Thousand Places to See Before You Die” and “one of the world’s sexiest beach bars”, is also reviewed by Uncommon Caribbean, the go-to resource for all things Caribbean. According to Steve, the creative driving force behind Uncommon Caribbean, devoted to a celebration of the undiscovered charms of the Antilles.

Steve and Patrick Bennett, two brothers from St. Croix, are changing the way people think about travel to the Caribbean by putting authentic aspects of island life and the region’s unique cultural heritage in the spotlight ahead of the glitzy, one-size fits all tourist trap image that has been popularized over the years.

Want a good map of the Caribbean? You’ll find it on Steve and Patrick’s website. Caribbean rum recipes? It’s all here.

Caribbean Escape Blog

The Caribbean Escape Blog, run by Rumshop Ryan, is also another useful resource for planning a Caribbean vacation. This recipe for conch salad, taken directly from Provo, should really hit the spot.

Travel Planning Apps and Tools

Of course, there is aso a wide variety of useful apps and tools to help you plan your trip. Here are just a few.

Google Trips

Google’s new travel app pulls hotel and flight data right from your Gmail account to automatically create trip portfolios in order to create instantly accessible destination-specific city guides.

Google’s app uses your consumer behavior history (if you receive invoices and receipts from online purchases in your Gmail account) to determine personal preferences, and then create custom-tailored travel recommendations for restaurants, local events, and activities.

Award Wallet

Award Wallet lets you track all your frequent flyer miles in one place.

Dealray

This airfare tracker app finds low-cost flight deals and sends notifications when it detects massive price drops, error fares, or flash sales.

PlanChat

PlanChat lets socially-connected travelers easily collaborate to create perfect group itineraries. Add restaurants, activities, and sightseeing ideas, plus keep track of expenses.

Streetography

Streetography is a map-based photo sharing app for iOS. The app lets you preview neighborhoods by viewing user-generated photos. You can take a look at a neighborhood before deciding to stay there.

Cool Cousin

Use Cool Cousin to get recommendations for unique things to do from savvy locals in 14 (so far) destinations. Their suggestions aren’t ones you will find in a typical guidebook, instead expect hip new spots in emerging neighborhoods.

Weather Channel

The Weather Channel app provides you with accurate forecasts, from local to international. Plan your day, your week or the next hours.

What’s Your Favorite Travel Tool?
