The Best Beaches Around Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

The Sands at Grace Bay is idyllically situated on a pristine stretch of one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Grace Bay Beach, named the Best Beach in the Caribbean by TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards and the “Caribbean’s Leading Beach Destination” by the 2013 World Travel Awards.

However, in addition to Grace Bay Beach, there are several stunning beaches for visitors to enjoy during their trip to Providenciales. Here’s a glimpse at some of the other beautiful beaches that can be found around Provo, during your visit to The Sands at Grace Bay:

Malcolm’s Beach – This beach is absolutely stunning and is located at the Northwest Point in Providenciales. However, you’ll need a high-clearance vehicle to reach it and the beach does not have any facilities or food service so it’s recommended that you pack your own food and drinks.

Pelican Beach – Here, travelers often find empty conch shells that have washed up onshore. Visitors of this beach in Leeward Provo are mesmerized by the bright turquoise water and enjoy taking strolls along the water’s edge.

Sapodilla Bay – Located on the North of South Dock Chalk Sound, this secluded and protected beach is another favorite island spot for walking. Visitors especially like going to this beach during low tide, when tiny sandbar islands form just offshore.

Half Moon Bay – This beach that is only accessible by boat, boasts two uninhabited cays and is one of the most spectacular beaches in Turks & Caicos. It’s a great beach for exploring the sandy coves, limestone cliffs or snorkeling the small shipwreck located just offshore. Companies like Silverdeep and Caicos Dream Tours offer beach drop-off’s and excursions to Half Moon Bay, as it’s only a short boat ride away from Provo.

Award-Winning Strawberry Mojito Recipe from Turks & Caicos

hemingway's

This past year, our Hemingway’s Restaurant & Bar took home the biggest award of the 2013 Annual Turks & Caicos Conch Festival – and was named “Best in Show” and the Festival’s Grand Champion for its delicious Conch Empanadas.  The restaurant also received the 1st place title for the festival’s Annual Mojito Competition sponsored by Bacardi, where the island’s best bartenders competed by displaying their creative twists on this classic Cuban cocktail.

Here’s the delicious and award-winning Strawberry Mojito recipe, that is best enjoyed here on the Hemingway’s open-air deck overlooking the stunning ocean and Grace Bay Beach:

Wes’s Famous Strawberry Mojito Ingredients:

  • Fresh Mint and Lime
  • Splash of Strawberry juice
  • Splash of Sweet and Sour Mix
  • 1 1/2 shot of Bacardi Light

***Shake and top off with splash of club soda

Introducing RiAnn Sutton, Sands Concierge and Superstar

RiAnn Sutton, Sands Concierge

We were excited and proud to learn so many Sands employees were nominated to receive Star Awards in February.

So we are going to regularly profile members of the Sands family in order to provide guests with an inside look at what the “locals” love about our island in the Caribbean.

RiAnn Sutton is our first “superstar” this regular series.

RiAnn Sutton, Sands Concierge

As concierge and front desk clerk, RiAnn is an expert about things to do, see, and experience on the island of Provo. So make sure you ask her for some advice about what to do.

Where are you from originally? How many years have you lived in Provo?

Although I was born in Trinidad, I have lived in the Turks and Caicos for 18 years.

How do you like to spend your free time in Provo?

I love going to the beach and just relaxing.

Most days when I’m not working I try to do an excursion like parasailing or snorkeling. As concierge, it helps if I have first-hand experience with the activities I am recommending!

What is one “must-do” or “must-see” attraction for tourists to experience in Provo?

The weekly Fish Fry *the* must-do for visitors and residents alike on Provo.

The Fish Fry is held every Thursday at the Bight Park, about 10 minutes by car from the Sands hotel. The event gives visitors a chance to experience our island culture whether it be the great food, the music, or the interesting performances by local artists. The Bight Park, with swings, a slide and places to climb, is perfect for kids.

Besides crab ‘n rice, lobster mac ‘n cheese and fish from local water, conch salad and conch fritters are sold here as well. It’s delicious and is a great way to meet the Provo locals.

Are there any favorite places you can recommend for families?

I always recommend the Coral Gardens snorkeling spot for our visitors travelling with children. Not a lot of families get to do the boat trip, so I think going out to the reef would be a fantastic and memorable experience.

You don’t have be a strong swimmer to see the beautiful reef fish at Coral Gardens. It’s a perfect family outing, and it’s right on Grace Bay Beach.

The waters are very calm thanks to a barrier reef located about a mile offshore. There is a smaller reef you can wade out to (it’s only a couple of steps) from the shoreline. If you have a mask and if you’re lucky you may see needlefish, different kinds of snapper, sergeant majors, jacks, schools of angel fish and more!

Remember to bring surf shoes, a mask and snorkel, and also remember that children should be watched at all times.

What kind of local Turks & Caicos food or drinks would you recommend that Provo visitors try?

Everyone who comes to TCI has to try conch at least once. Conch of course is a large shellfish with a beautiful shell that is native to the Turks and Caicos forms a big part of local cuisine.

Our conch salad and conch fritters here on Provo are the best in the Caribbean. Various travel writers have even remarked how good the conch fritters are at Hemingway’s, our very own beachfront restaurant.

Are there any other island restaurants that you like?

Besides are very own Hemingway’s on the beach, my favorite casual restaurant is Mango Reef. It’s very popular with visitors to our island. The Mango Reef is located just down the beach (about two minutes’ walk) from the Sands, towards Coral Gardens – it’s a beachfront restaurant with casual, open-air dining.

The Mango Reef offers “fusion” cuisine with a lot of Asian and French influences… and a lot of fresh local fish. Their chef comes from Brittany, and the staff are very multicultural, so there is always something new, exciting and sophisticated to try on the menu. I like the seafood salad myself!

5 Spring Break Vacation Ideas on Provo (Turks and Caicos)

default_900x600

If you have survived the Polar Vortex, why not make plans for a quick escape to Provo on the Turks and Caicos?

The kids are out of school, to it’s a perfect time to enjoy clear blue skies, crystal-clear water and an island lifestyle that can’t be beat.

Here are 5 Caribbean spring break vacation ideas on Provo:

1. Visit the National Environmental Centre and Children’s Park

The National Environmental Centre (NEC), located on Lower Bight Road in Providenciales, opened its doors on April 21st,2007. The exhibits and displays within the Centre focus on the natural habitats and ecosystems of the Turks and Caicos Islands. There are also rotating exhibits, highlighting ongoing research activities in the Islands.

A Children’s Park is located nearby.

2. Visit Chalk Sound

The western half of Provo is mostly barren wilderness, home to the island’s best natural attraction, Chalk Sound National Park. The park is a three-mile-long (5km) bay a few miles southwest of downtown Providenciales. The color of the water is a uniform turquoise and studded with countless mushroom-like tiny islets. Also on the western part of the island is Northwest Point Marine National Park, which extends to nearby reefs and several saline lakes that attract breeding and migrant waterfowl. You’ll have to hike to get there.

3. Go horseback riding

Enjoy horseback riding on the beach and into the shallow waters with a backdrop of white sand and turquoise water. Ride along quiet dirt roads, canals and secluded beaches of Long Bay Hills, Providenciales in the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands.

4. Thursday Fish Fry

Every Thursday from 5:30p to 9:30p at the Bight (Children’s) Park, over a dozen local food vendors, entertainers and cultural acts come together for Island Fish Fry to create an evening of “all things TCI.”

5. Relax on Grace Bay Beach

Recognized as one of the top 1o beaches in the entire world, Grace Bay Beach combines heavenly turquoise waters with powdery, soft sand, perfect for a romantic getaway, or a special retreat for your entire family.

Grace Bay Beach Wins More Awards from TripAdvisor

grace bay tripadvisor awards

Coming on the heels of Providenciales being named the #1 Island in the Caribbean and the #2 Island in the World in February by TripAdvisor, our wonderful island in the Caribbean has received yet more accolades and recognition.

Our very own Grace Bay Beach, right here in Turks and Caicos has been called a great family getaway by travelers looking for ways to escape the dreaded Polar Vortex.

Writer Eileen Ogintz notes that Grace Bay Beach is a better choice for families than the “rougher” waters of Hawaii.

Kids, she says, love the Sands Resort’s “lazy river”, and beach-front Hemingway’s restaurant, with famous conch fritters, chowder and empanadas, is also an island favorite. Other attractions when visiting the Turks and Caicos include a long barrier reef, bonefishing, and kiteboarding.

Toronto writer Corinne McDermott, writing for an audience dealing with this year’s “big chill” also recognized Grace Bay beach as one of the best beaches for families:  the soft sand and gentle water makes (Grace Bay) ideal for little ones.

In January the Sands at Grace Bay received Expedia’s Top Partner Award for Turks & Caicos. The Sands Resort received this award earlier in February at the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association’s annual awards in Montego Bay.

Race for the Conch: The Sport of Open Water Swimming

race for the conch

The annual Race for the Conch open-water swimming race will be held at Grace Bay in July.

To help our guests learn more about this sport, we contacted the World Open Water Swimming Association for an introduction to this fascinating and popular pursuit.

What is the attraction of open water swimming?

Everyone is different but open water swimming provides an individual who can swim a strong sense of freedom, adventure, challenge and exploration in a dynamic environment where the variables can range from water temperature to water conditions.

Can anyone do it? Do you need special training?

Yes, but firstly they must of course be able to swim. Pool swimming is dramatically different as you can always get out of the pool, hang on the wall or lane lines. Therefore, the ability to swim or tread water constantly is an essential skill.

What are some misconceptions about the sport?

There are many! For example, do you have to be good or fast? Neither are a requirement.

Do you need to wear a wetsuit? No.

Do you need to swim without a wetsuit? No.

Will a shark eat you? The likelihood of a shark attack during a competitive swim is as close to zero per cent as can be possible. While there have been shark encounters (where a shark is casually cruising in its own element) during a handful of swims in history (e.g., Australia or Florida), there has never been a shark attack during a race that I know of.

Where is the biggest open water swimming community?

In terms of a community, I think big communities include a nice place to swim in that is close to a large metropolitan area with a healthy triathlon community.

This includes London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Melbourne, Barcelona, Cape Town, Sydney, Honolulu, Cancun, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and several other hotbeds of open water like Sandycove Island (Ireland), Strait of Messina (Italy), Lake Ontario (Canada), Wellington (New Zealand), Miami (Florida), etc.

What makes for a good open water swimming course?

Number One is safety. Is the course close to the shore? Are there sufficient safety personnel on the course?

Number Two is the scenic beauty, both on the land and in the water.

Number Three is the uniqueness of the course (e.g., going around the island or from a well-known point-to-point course).

Number Four is its variability (e.g., does the course have waves, currents, wind, coral reefs, marine life)?

For spectators, where is the best place to watch an open water swimming race?

Most definitely, the best place to see the race is from a boat in order to watch the swimmers up close. The second-best place is either the start or finish where much of the mass participation action is. The third-best place is around the turn buoys when many swimmers try to swim in the same place at the same time, leading to a mass of physicality.

Where is the “biggest” open water swimming race held each year?

In terms of the number of people in a mass participation swim, it is the Sun Moon Lake International Festival in central Taiwan with 25,000 maximum entrants (which they always meet).

In terms of number of people in a competitive event, it is the Midmar Mile in South Africa with about 18,000 entrants annually.

The Top 100 Open Water Swims (in the world; in the US) shows many of the biggest swims.

The Sands at Grace Bay is one of the recommended hotels for the Race for the Conch.
