An Extraordinary Turks and Caicos Wedding… In The Rain

We had the pleasure of recently hosting the wedding of Lisa & Kevin Owens. Their wedding day was far from ordinary – in fact, it was extraordinary.

On the day of their Grace Bay Beach wedding ceremony that was held at our resort, it was a picture perfect day here in Turks & Caicos complete with sunny and clear skies.

As the beach ceremony began, the weather took a sudden turn for the worse and the skies opened to pouring rain – not something that the bride and groom had ever expected would happen during their beautiful beach wedding ceremony. However, Lisa and Kevin were as determined as ever to say their “I Do’s” even in the midst of the pouring rain. Our resort staff worked quickly to provide umbrellas and beach towels to the soaked wedding guests, while the ceremony continued.

While most couples fear rain on their wedding day, Lisa and Kevin’s positive outlook, humor and extraordinarily memorable wedding experience that they graciously shared with us below, will hopefully reduce the fears of unexpected weather to future brides and grooms who are worried that rain may damper their special day:

“Lidra Barranco at The Sands was my contact for planning the wedding ceremony (and Ri-ann helped her to execute everything the day of the wedding). She was very helpful and responsive to my 8 months-worth of email communications to her. The ceremony package we had through The Sands included the officiant & marriage documents, the beach arch, chairs with white covers, bouquets & boutonnieres for our wedding party, a steel drum player, and the wedding cake – which meant less planning for me! They handled all the details! The ceremony was set up on the far side of Grace Bay beach at The Sands where the huts ended. Everything looked beautiful and went smoothly, until the skies opened up out of nowhere and it started pouring, soaking everyone. The staff provided umbrellas and towels as quickly as they could to try to dry people off. The ceremony kept going – we all had some good laughs – and we envision the pictures will be pretty entertaining!

All in all, our wedding day was perfect and we couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. We heard a ton of “best wedding ever” and “best trip ever” comments from our guests, which made us so happy since everyone had traveled so far to celebrate with us. It was slightly nerve-wracking planning a destination wedding sight unseen, having never been to the island before, and not using a hired wedding planner. Meeting with all of the vendors/staff the week leading up to the wedding put my nerves at ease – they know what they are doing and they are great at it!

Thank you, Sands, for a wonderful wedding ceremony, honeymoon, and memories that will last forever. We can’t wait to return to the island and hopefully see some of the wonderful people we met again.”
– Lisa & Kevin Owens

In the end, Lisa and Kevin enjoyed a beautiful rainbow as the tropical Turks & Caicos rainstorm subsided following their wet wedding ceremony. They still made memories of a lifetime and have taken away incredible photos and stories from their beach wedding ceremony – that was filled with lots of laughter and love.

A Guide to Weddings in the Turks and Caicos

turks & caicos beach weddings

The Turks and Caicos is an archipelago of small Caribbean islands and cays located just southeast of the Bahamas.

The islands are protected by one of the longest barrier reefs in the world, which is a key congregation point for migrating Humpback whales. As well, Ambassador dolphins cruise just off Grace Bay Beach.

The white sand beaches and turquoise waters found throughout this string of islands are an incredible sight and make for magical, romantic weddings.

With that in mind, we’ve prepared this Turks and Caicos wedding guide that includes information about:

  • Basic information about our lovely Caribbean islands
  • Excursion ideas for honeymooners and wedding guests
  • Where in Providenciales couples can go to take the best wedding photos.

Key Turks and Caicos Facts

Where are the Turks and Caicos Islands?

By air, the Turks and Caicos Islands are located just an hour from the North American mainland, just to the southeast of the Bahamas.

Cockburn Town, the capital of Turks and Caicos, is located on the small island of Grand Turk. Providenciales, home to the territory’s only international airport with direct flights to London, New York and other main airport hubs, is the heart of Turks and Caicos and the site of the world-famous Grace Bay Beach.

We have included some basic information about flights to Provo and the Turks and Caicos at the end of this article.

First, here are some basic facts that anyone not familiar with Turks and Caicos should know:

  • From November to May, the average temperature ranges between 82 to 84 degrees
  • The Turks and Caicos Islands consist of 40 islands and cays (pronounced keys)
  • The territory is 575 miles southeast of Miami (about an hour by plane)
  • English is spoken and American currency is accepted
  • There are 350 days of sunshine each year
  • Providenciales is home to Grace Bay Beach, the #1 beach in the Caribbean and #2 Beach in the world according to TripAdvisor
  • Grace Bay Beach was voted the third best beach in the world according to CNN Travel’s 2013 “World’s 100 Best Beaches” rankings
  • US arrivals are required to display a passport, as do visitors from other countries; visas are usually not needed
  • The Turks & Caicos Islands are a British dependency

Grace Bay Beach

The powdery white sand of Grace Bay Beach contrasts beautifully with the turquoise water and onyx sky. On top of that, Grace Bay Beach is on the west (leeward) side of the island, and makes for perfect sunset photos. The Sands at Grace Bay is situated on this world-renowned beach, offering couples incredible photo opportunities with the convenience of staying at the resort.

The Sands has partnered with Brilliant by Tropical Imaging, to offer speciality priced packages to capture your special moments during your wedding, honeymoon, and vacation.

Menu Planning Ideas

The island-inspired cuisine of the Turks and Caicos, like that in the rest of the Caribbean, benefits from a rich variety of local influences. There are common themes in many dishes include spices, bananas, fresh citrus, corn and ocean salt.

Freshly caught fish include Grouper and Mahi Mahi, as well as Spiny Turks & Caicos lobsters when in season. The Turks & Caicos Islands are well-known for their iconic conch, a kind of shellfish notable for its distinctive shell , delicious taste, and variety of preparation options here on Provo.

Right on Grace Bay Beach, with beautiful sunset views, Hemingway’s Beachfront Restaurant & Bar has won numerous awards for its delectable island cuisine and is the perfect beachside venue for wedding receptions and rehearsal dinners.

Try the rum punch while on Provo!

A rum-based punch is often served during celebrations and weddings, and is a popular drink in the coastal bars, eateries and at our resort.

Things to do in the Turks & Caicos for Honeymooners and Your Guests

Whether you’re planning a luxurious destination wedding with guests from all over the world, or you’re celebrating an intimate and laid-back ceremony for two, there are plenty of fun and unique things for you and your wedding guests to do during your visit to Turks & Caicos.

While many visitors enjoy simply soaking up the sun or trying out watersports activities offered on Grace Bay Beach, here are some additional island adventures and excursions:

scuba diving grace bay

Tour the Islands

Dive one of the longest coral reefs in the world. Take a sailing cruise to one of the many small cays that make up the Turks and Caicos island chain. Explore a limestone cave and learn more about the first inhabitants of our island chain.

Go on a Sailing Trip

Sailing is a great way to explore the Turks and Caicos. The Caicos Bight to the south of Providenciales is a shallow body of water perfect for snorkeling, swimming, fishing, or just island hopping to secluded destinations.

The more open, deeper waters north of Providenciales are the gateway to everything from scuba diving one of the world’s longest barrier reefs to romantic sunset cruises.

Other sailing trips can be made to Little Water Cay, also known Iguana Island, as well as North and Middle Caicos. Private sunset sailing charters are also offered for interested couples or wedding parties and are an ideal way to celebrate your special day with a champagne toast at sea with your loved ones and guests.

Go Snorkeling

Some of the best snorkeling spots (and indeed some of the best in the Caribbean) are located near Providenciales and Grace Bay Beach.

We offer our resort guests complimentary use of our snorkeling equipment for underwater exploration during your stay. Snorkeling excursions are great for all ages and ability levels and usually include a sailing trip that cruises past white powder-soft beaches to anchor at isolated reefs.

Turks and Caicos Increases Protection for Reefs

Move Protects Wildlife, Diving in Turks and Caicos

Just offshore from the Turks and Caicos is home lies one of the longest reefs in the world.

In fact, nearly all of the Turks and Caicos island lies over what’s left of an ancient coral reef dating back to the Cretaceous period. Limestone sediments from the ancient reef are responsible for the powdery white color and texture the beaches that ring the islands.

Reefs are very delicate, and can be easily damaged or even destroyed by human activity. In October the Turks and Caicos government announced some great news:

The Turks and Caicos Islands Government has partnered with the Reef Check Foundation to establish a coral reef monitoring program throughout the islands.

In September 2014, DEMA hosted workshops on the islands of Grand Turk and Providenciales to train professional and recreational SCUBA divers in coral reef monitoring methods.

The partnership is just one of a number of green initiatives championed by the Turks and Caicos government to ensure that the tourism industry continues to have a low environmental footprint.

Coral reefs near The Sands at Grace Bay include the ever-popular Coral Gardens. There are also catamaran tours to coral reefs departing from Provo, and snorkeling excursions to Smith’s Reef.

Holiday Turks and Caicos Travel Tips For Families

The Sands at Grace Bay is delighted to be named a “2014 Family Favorite Hotel” by TripAdvisor’s Family Travel Site, Family Vacation Critic. Family Vacation Critic recently compiled a helpful list of tips for families that are planning to travel over the busy holiday travel season, from the help of their readers. These tips are great for families planning a holiday or winter trip to Turks & Caicos and The Sands at Grace Bay. Here is a summary of three of these top holiday travel tips compiled by Family Vacation Critic’s Amanda Geronikos:

1. Plan in Advance: Reserve your flight and airline seats early, to ensure the entire family can sit together. It can be hard enough for families to make it through a flight with young children, so skip the hassle of having to ask people to switch their assigned seats so your family members can sit together by reserving your airline seats well in advance.

2. Download Travel Apps: Family Vacation Critic shared a few of their favorite apps that are helpful for families, but we especially liked their “TSA Await” app recommendation – because this app calculates how much time you may spend waiting in the airport security lines. Those traveling with kids may wish to check this app when planning their airport arrival times, to ensure that the family gets through the security check in lines without having to rush or fearing a missed flight.

3. Pack Snacks & Activities: Never underestimate the power of preparing an “activity bag” to keep children busy during a long flight. Great children activities for a flight may include crayons and coloring books, joke books and crossword puzzles, a journal and paper for writing, and DVD’s. You would also be wise to pack a favorite pillow and blanket for kids to sleep more soundly during their travels.

Help The Sands Support Provo’s Children On Sunday, November 30th: Wrightfully Fit Charity Sunset Walk/Run To Support Provo Children’s Home

The Sands at Grace Bay proudly supports the Provo Children’s Home as its charitable cause – a safe haven and home for orphaned and at-risk children between the ages of 6 and 15 years old in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos. On Sunday, November 30th, the 6th Annual Wrightfully Fit  5K/10K Charity Sunset Run/Walk will take place, with proceeds benefitting Provo Children’s Home and TCI’s orphaned and at-risk children. The Sands at Grace Bay is participating in this worthwhile event and we hope that resort guests and island visitors are able to join us to help raise money to support Provo Children’s Home and Turks & Caicos children. The charity run/walk starts at 4:30pm and there will be an“after party” filled with fun events for the family including music, a raffle drawing, a bar, and entertainment. Not only is the after-party a free event that will be fun for resort guests to attend, but there will also be a silent auction during the party where bidders will have the chance to win amazing prizes including a 2-night stay in an ocean view suite at The Sands at Grace Bay.

Resort guests can sign up and register for the Sunday walk/run at the “Wrightfully Fit” Gym in the Salt Mills Plaza. If you can’t run or walk with us on Sunday – you can also donate canned or dry food or your volunteer time to these children in need.

image002-7

We are especially appreciative for John Wright, who has put this event together for the past six years to raise awareness and funds for the Provo Children’s Home. This year 100% of the proceeds from the PCH Bar, raffle, and most of the silent auction will be donated to the PCH. The cost of the run is only $20 per person and $50 for a family of five.  It’s a great outing for the whole family, for both walkers and runners as well as for parents with children in strollers, dogs, and companions.

Donations, fundraising events and volunteering of time are all encouraged and greatly needed to help PCH with their daily operations and costs.

Volunteers are also needed in many areas and interested resort guests can find out more information about volunteer opportunities by visiting the following Provo Children’s Home site: http://pch.tc/volunteers.html

You may visit the following site to make an Individual Pledge: http://pch.tc/pdf/PCH%20365_individuals.pdf
