“What to do on Christmas in the Caribbean?” A Look at Holiday Traditions.

Christmas in the Caribbean is celebrated in a variety of unique and interesting ways. There are special foods and celebrations, each tied to local traditions.

Puerto Rico

You’ll hear American carols, “Feliz Navidad” by Jose Feliciano and traditional posada songs.

Jamaica

Jamaicans celebrate by going to church, exchanging gifts with their families, and gathering for a large meal. Dinner on Christmas Day, the biggest feast for Jamaicans, includes (of course) curry goat, and rice and gungo peas. Gungo peas usually ripen in December, and are a Christmas specialty for Jamaica, .

Trinidad

In this country located just off South America, the Venezuelan “parang music” adds a lively beat as neighbors travel  from house to house to serenade holiday gatherings.

Dominican Republic

Like in Trinidad, in this Caribbean country that border Haiti, groups of singers stroll through the neighborhood singing traditional Dominican folk songs about Christmas.

The French Caribbean

The Christmas season continues to be celebrate until Three Kings’ Day, or Epiphany, on January 6. This day commemorates “les Rois”, or the coming of the Three Wise Men and is the day when people in the French Caribbean take down their Christmas trees.

The Bahamas

The Bahamas, Turks and Caicos’ neighbor to the northwest, is famous for celebrating Junkanoo on Boxing Day (the day after Christmas observed in many Commonwealth countries, including Turks and Caicos), where masked revelers sing, dance, and drum their way through town streets in an exuberant parade.

In fact, Turks and Caicos has its own version of Junkanoo, which we call Maskanoo.

Celebrating Christmas in Turks and Caicos

The holiday season lasts for at least a month in Turks and Caicos. This means that there is almost always something for your family to do on your vacation here.

Besides the Christmas trees and colorful lights, there are events occurring from late November to early January.

Conch Festival (November 25th)

Every November, the island of Providenciales hosts the Turks and Caicos Conch Festival – a celebration of the islands’ national symbol and top export. This large shellfish has always played an integral role in local cuisine, which they now share with the world.

This year the the Conch Festival starts on November 25th. This is the official kickoff of the Christmas season, with a visit from Santa for the children.  Learn more about the Conch Festival.

Christmas Day in Turks and Caicos

Our resort typically decorates a spectacular Christmas trees that greets you when you arrive in the resort. There will be decorations around the resort as well, adding to the festive atmosphere. Many restaurants offer a special Christmas dinner service.

Maskanoo Parade (December 26th)

Maskanoo is an annual event in the Turks and Caicos and is held “Boxing Day”, the day after Christmas (a holiday in Commonwealth countries like the Turks and Caicos).

Courtesy TCI Tourism

Maskanoo has its roots in the ‘Masses’, a masquerade tradition that fuses traditional African culture with costumed balls from the colonial era. Observed by the residents of Provo today, Maskanoo originated with enslaved people brought to work nearby salt ponds two hundred years ago.

Here on Provo, the Maskanoo parade on December 26th travels along Grace Bay Road between the Regent Village and Salt Mills Plaza. Grace Bay Road is closed to traffic for this event.

Food, drink and souvenirs are widely available from local vendors, and visitors can enjoy a street parade, local music, island food, arts, & entertainment.

Post-Christmas Beach Party

Two days after Maskanoo, Post-Christmas Beach Party is held on December 28th, right on Grace Bay Beach. This annual event features live music, stalls selling authentic local “comfort food”, and other events.

New Year’s Eve and “Old Year’s Night”

In Turks and Caicos, New Year’s Eve traditionally begins with an island tradition called Old Year’s Night. On Provo, locals typically attend church services in the evening, and church bells ring out to bring good luck into the New Year.

At midnight, fireworks are set off on the beach to welcome the New Year.

Is Halloween Celebrated in Turks and Caicos?

Davy Jones Pumpkin

“Is Halloween celebrated in the Caribbean?” is one of the questions our concierge gets asked a lot at this time of year. The answer? “It’s complicated.”

Halloween itself is generally not observed in Caribbean culture, which can be quite religious. More than 90 per cent of people in the Turks and Caicos identify as Christian, compared to the more secular United States. For this reason, and also because Turks and Caicos is a British Overseas Territory, with many British rather than American traditions, Halloween is not as much a part of the culture as on the mainland.

What Does Halloween Come From?

Halloween’s origins date back 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts celebrated their new year on November 1, the end of summer and the fall harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter. On the night of October 31 it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, and the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins.

The Roman Empire would eventually conquer the majority of Celtic territory, and two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic Samhain celebration—the first was a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. Later on the Roman Catholic Church would observe All Martyr’s Day on November 1st.

Celebrating Halloween With Your Kids in Turks and Caicos

Having been secularized, Halloween has become one of the most popular festivals in the world. Halloween is now celebrated in Turks and Caicos each year, making a late-October or early-November holiday in Turks and Caicos great for families.

Different resorts host Halloween celebrations each year, and events for families are typically held in and around the Bight neighborhood, just off central Grace Bay Beach. In past years a Halloween party was held at Provo Elementary School, but each year it often depends on the resort to organized events, so be sure to check TripAdvisor for up-to-date information.

Maskanoo

While there is no connection to Halloween or All Hallow’s Eve, there is another celebration on Providenciales that features, costumes, food and treats for children.

Maskanoo is an annual event in the Turks and Caicos and is held “Boxing Day”, the day after Christmas (a holiday in Commonwealth countries like TCI).

Maskanoo has its roots in the ‘Masses’, a masquerade tradition that fuses traditional African culture with costumed balls held in the colonial era. On Provo, Maskanoo originated with enslaved people brought by the Bermudian salt rakers to work the salt ponds of  Salt Cay, and South Caicos two hundred years ago.

4 Fun Offbeat Family Activities for Halloween

No matter where in the world you are, here are some fun Halloween activities to do with your kids:

1. Go “Booing”

“Booing” is a popular new Halloween tradition that involves secretly dropping off a homemade goodie on a friend or neighbor’s doorstep. The catch? Your gift should also include a note or poem instructing your friend or neighbor to do the same. For children, ringing the doorbell and running away without getting caught is almost as much fun as trying to figure out who “booed” you.

2. Tell scary stories by candlelight.

In this age of iPads and Alexa speakers, reading by candlelight will be a special experience for your children, So, for the week before Halloween, tell spooky stories at bedtime. Light several candles to make it extra spooky and at the end of storytime let each kid blow one out.

3. Have a Halloween fashion show

For an excellent rainy-day activity in October, just before Halloween, make some cards with costume ideas (a policeman, a chef, a fitness instructor, etc.), have your kids pick an idea from a hat. Then, make them pull together a costume to match that idea.

After that, have them walk the “scaredy-catwalk” to show off.

4. Take a family vacation

Another tradition you could start for your family would be a nice vacation. Most families take their vacations during the summer and winter break from school. By scheduling your vacation near Halloween, you will avoid most of the travel problems that are associated with peak vacation times and costs. May we suggest the Turks and Caicos?

The Sands at Grace Bay Announces Re-opening Post Hurricanes Irma and Maria

The Sands at Grace Bay is thrilled to announce that we are now welcoming guests post Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Likewise, Hemingway’s Bar & Restaurant has re-opened. Join us for a spectacular vacation and enjoy breathtaking bliss along Turks and Caicos’ beautiful Grace Bay Beach.

The Real Facts

While the two hurricanes caused much damage to many of the surrounding islands as well as to parts of several residential, non-tourist parts of Providenciales, Grace Bay Beach was spared of incurring the brunt of these storms, thus, The Sands at Grace Bay did not suffer any structural damage.

None of the resort’s recently remodeled 114 studio- and suite-style accommodations were impacted and all are fully functional with electrical power, A/C, water, and WiFi to provide guests with plush comfort throughout their stay.

The island’s airport is open and actively receiving flights. Ships have been arriving to the island since just after Hurricane Irma to deliver all commodities needed and grocery stores are open and re-stocked. Many other area resorts and restaurants are also open or opening in the coming week to cater to the guests and to ensure the continued success of the island’s tourism sector

.

“We are thrilled to share the news with our past and prospective guests, and our travel partners that we have re-opened our doors,” said Mona Beeson, General Manager of The Sands at Grace Bay. “We understand that there has been some confusion in the marketplace as to the level of damages the area has sustained. Rest assured that we would not have opened if we were not 100% certain that we are providing our guests with the very best in amenities and customer servicethat we are known for.

“Guests will also be pleased to know that Grace Bay Beach, acclaimed as one of the world’s best and most award-clad beaches, remains just as spectacular as ever,” continued Beeson. “In fact, waves from the storms broke at the reef and actually brushed more sand upon the island’s shores in this area giving us an even more expansive beach. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to Turks and Caicos’ Grace Bay Beach.”

In addition to offering some of the most affordable rates along Provo’s world-famous Grace Bay Beach, guests of The Sands at Grace Bay also benefit from the following free resort amenities during their stay: three freeform swimming pools; complimentary use of watersports equipment – including kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, snorkel gear and Hobie Cats; bicycles for nearby island exploration; a weekly Manager’s cocktail party; a tennis/basketball court, and many other exclusive offerings. The resort’s spacious studio and suite accommodations are equipped with all the comforts of home with most suite units featuring modern kitchens and appliances, dining and living room areas, screened-in balconies, washer & dryers, free WiFi and more.

Part of the celebrated Hartling Group of resorts located on Providenciales in Turks and Caicos, the re-opening of The Sands at Grace Bay coincides with the re-opening of its sister properties The Palms located on Grace Bay Beach and The Shore Club, situated on Long Bay Beach.

Tips on Getting Cheap Tickets to Turks and Caicos

For some people, the actual planning process is one of the most enjoyable parts of taking a vacation. It’s always a challenge to hunt down the best flight deals, and most of us are familiar with these tips:

  • Book six weeks in advance
  • Scan for morning deals
  • Always buy on Tuesdays at 3PM EST
  • Cheapest day to fly: Wednesday

However, there are even more tips that will help you save big while planning a vacation to Turks and Caicos. Here are some of them:

1. Search for tickets one at a time

Typically if there’s only one seat left in the lowest fare class but you’re searching for multiple tickets for your family, most automated systems will show you the highest fare for all the tickets. So, try searching one at a time, just in case there are limited seats on sale.

2. Search for flights midweek

Airlines tend to launch their sales on Tuesdays and end them on Thursdays, so don’t limit your searches to the weekends.

3. Fly on the actual holiday

It may seem counterintuitive, but the biggest savings can be found by flying on the actual holiday, such as Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. The exception is if you’re traveling over a three-day weekend—then, everyone is looking to fly on the actual holiday, so that’s the perfect time to try and extend your vacation by a day.

4. Try to fly at least one leg of your trip on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday

Why? Because planes are least full on these days of the week, these flights usually have the lowest fares.

5. Monitor Twitter, Facebook and airline emails

Follow your favorite airlines on social media in addition to signing up for discount online travel company emails.

BONUS TIP: Try out off-peak or shoulder-season travel

During months when destinations see a lower volume of visitors, airlines respond by sometimes offering ticket prices. Here in Turks and Caicos, the quiet time of the year stretches from the summer months until early October.

Help Staff at The Sands at Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos

On September 7, Hurricane Irma passed by the island of Providenciales. It was a very intense storm that brought with it intense winds and rainfall, as well as a storm surge. Luckily, the Sands resort and beautiful Grace Bay Beach emerged relatively unscathed, and we’re on track to opening for the season as scheduled.

While the beach and the resort were lucky, a lot of our good fortune is due to the hard efforts of our excellent staff. Staff at the Sands not only prepared the resort to withstand the hurricane, they were incredibly helpful afterward by taking care of any remaining guests, as well as other visitors to Providenciales. We’re really thankful to have such a dedicated team of people who care so much.

However, while the Sands will be fine, many of our staff were more severely affected by Hurricane Irma, and have experienced life-changing events such as:

  • Serious damage to or have lost the roof to their own home
  • Damage so serious to their rental accommodation that they must find a new home until repairs are made

There are also staff with homes that have been completely destroyed and are without any reliable housing now.

Assist Staff Rebuilding Their Homes and Their Lives

Following in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, we are creating a fund so that you may contribute to assist some of our staff in rebuilding their homes and their lives. As mentioned, some have lost part of their roofs, some have lost truly everything.

DONATE NOW

The donation campaign is being hosted on Generosity, a community for showing and sharing compassion through socially conscious fundraising.

Anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated.

Soon the lazy days of summer will be behind us. A distant memory of sunny days, picnics at the park, camping by the lake and the memorable sounds of the local ice cream truck circling the neighbourhood.

Or try a dinner favorite; fresh grouper, lightly spiced and pan seared, served with a tequila sauce and veggie salsa. Craving pasta instead? The penne with lightly sautéed shrimp and delicious garlic cream sauce will satisfy your hunger. If you have a gourmet palate, Hemingway’s recommends the filet mignon seared with red wine and mushrooms.

Things To Do In The Caribbean

“What are Popular Day Trips in the Turks and Caicos?”

“What are popular day trips in the Turks and Caicos?” is a common question we’re asked. While many visitors to Turks and Caicos are quite happy to relax on Grace Bay Beach, with maybe an expedition to the swim-up bar in the resort pool, the isolated islands and cays here provide an entire world to explore.

But what many visitors are unaware of is that the pristine, isolated cays and islands of Turks and Caicos provide plenty of opportunities for exploration, as well the chance to stay at some of the most magnificent luxury resorts in the world.

Providenciales is just the gateway to all that the Turks and Caicos has to offer. Even if you’re happy to be based on Grace Bay Beach, there are also day trips that are easy to arrange.

Iguana Island

We often recommend that guests and families staying at The Sands at Grace Bay consider planning a visit to “Iguana Island” during their Turks & Caicos trip.

Several Providenciales tour providers offer round trip boat rides and snorkeling excursions that include a visit to Little Water Cay – aka “Iguana Island” – a small, protected cay that is home to thousands of endangered Turks and Caicos Rock Iguanas.

This is one of the only places in the world where you can spot these unique iguanas in their natural habitat – and is top attraction for kids.

These large lizards may look scary at first, but they are actually harmless and shy herbivores. A walking trail through Little Water Cay offers visitors an opportunity to view these incredible reptiles up close, as they sun along the sand and rocks of their protected island.

North and Middle Caicos Day Trips

Lying to the east of Providenciales, sparsely populated North and Middle Caicos offer a glimpse into the way the Caribbean used to be. Perfect for day trips, both islands feature isolated beaches, hiking trails to hike and caves to explore.

North Caicos (called just “North”) is a fun island to explore. With its lush green hills, it’s very distinct from Providenciales, yet has many of the same attractions: beautiful beaches, friendly people and peaceful surroundings.

Key attractions on Middle Caicos include exploring Wade’s Green Plantation and snorkeling at Three Mary’s Cay.

After that, drive over the causeway that connects North and Middle Caicos.

Middle Caicos

Middle Caicos, to the east of North Caicos, is an International Ramsar Biodiversity Wetland Reserve, a site dedicated to protecting the habitat for the local flora and fauna.

The island is a combination of beautiful inlets, marshes, mangroves and land ponds which serve as a haven for wildlife and nature. The rambling trails offer hours of exploration by bike or on foot.

Middle Caicos is also known for its magnificent caves. The caves, which can be easily reached as part of a day trip from Providenciales, are among the largest in the Caribbean. It’s a great way to take a look back in time at the natural history of the islands.

And of course there are magnificent beaches here, including Mudjin Harbor, one of the world’s most breathtaking places. Many days you may be the only one there.

Further up the road, Bambarra Beach is the home of one of the first settlements in the islands (it’s where our local drink Bambarra Rum gets its name).

Eat lunch at Daniel’s Cafe on Middle Caicos, which serves up fresh local seafood with a view of the beautiful white sand beach.

South Caicos

The “Big South,” isolated South Caicos is known for fishing, paddling, snorkeling and spectacular sunsets. Many parts of the island remain untouched and undeveloped, making it easy to imagine the days of when pirates ruled these seas.

These days South Caicos is an excellent spot to see flamingos, or encounter donkeys roaming freely on the island. The rolling landscape makes South Caicos a great place to enjoy a hike or hop on a bike.

This is the Caribbean untouched, the way it used to be.

Just a short 10 minute flight from Providenciales, South Caicos is an easy hop to enjoy another stunning private island. When visiting Turks and Caicos, spend a few days in Providenciales and then fly to newly opened East Bay Resort on South Caicos.
